Direct serogrouping of Streptococcus pneumoniae strains in clinical samples by use of a latex agglutination test.
Pneumotest-Latex (Statens Seruminstitut) was evaluated for direct serogrouping of Streptococcus pneumoniae strains in clinical samples from patients with invasive disease. The technique was accurate to its level of discrimination for 62 of 67 clinical samples (92.5%). Pneumotest-Latex would be a useful alternative for direct serogrouping of pneumococci in clinical samples.

This study evaluated the usefulness of the Pneumotest-Latex assay for serotyping Streptococcus pneumoniae isolates directly in clinical samples. With an agreement of 88.1% with a PCR-based reference method, this test can be a useful tool for this study purpose, especially in clinical laboratories that do not have access to nucleic acid amplification technologies.

The Pneumoslide latex agglutination tests was evaluated with 106 strains of Streptococcus pneumoniae and 56 strains representing seven species of viridans streptococci. The Pneumoslide test gave one false-positive and one false-negative reaction. Testing of isolated colonies for solubility in 10% sodium deoxycholate was as accurate but was simpler and less expensive to perform.
